INTRODUCTION
This readme file contains all the information you need to get Call of Duty: World at War Multiplayer Beta installed and set up on your computer and troubleshoot the latest issues that may arise during installations and setup.
INSTALLATION
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP or Windows Vista(R) (Windows 95/98/ME/2000 are unsupported) Microsoft DirectX(R) 9.0c (included)
- HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 3.0 GHz or AMD(R) Athlon(TM) 64 3200+ processor or better supported RAM: 512MB RAM (1GB for Windows Vista) VIDEO CARD: 256 MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 6600GT or better or ATI Radeon(TM) 1600XT or better SOUND CARD: 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card HDD SPACE: 1.5GB of free hard drive space MP HOSTING: To MP matches, a 2Ghz dual-core or better processor is recommended. INTERNET: Broadband connection and service required for Multiplayer Connectivity
DIRECTX
Call of Duty: World at War MultiPlayer Beta (hereafter COD:WaW MPB) requires that your computer have the latest version of DirectX 9.0c installed in order to run. This is available online at:
In order for the MPB to run, Windows Vista users will need to install the update for DirectX 9.0c. This is necessary even if DirectX 10 is installed.
PUNKBUSTER(TM)
During the installation of COD:WaW MPB you will be given the option to install Even Balance, Inc.'s PunkBuster anti-cheat system. This is optional, however if it is not installed you will not be able to play on servers that have PunkBuster enabled.
UNINSTALLING
COD:WaW can be uninstalled from your system from the Add/Remove programs section of the Windows Control Panel (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel). Select COD:WaW MPB from the list of applications installed and select Change/Remove, then follow the instructions on screen.
HOSTING A SERVER
NOTE: Activision does not provide support for running or maintaining a server beyond the initial stages of launching the server. Activision only provides support for the Windows server delivered with the MPB.
NOTE: The maximum number of supported players is 32
You will first need to determine the server type which best suits your needs, Listen or Dedicated.
A Listen server is ideal for small to mid-sized or small internet games where all participants are able to directly connect to the server via a known IP address. Listen servers are not intended to run indefinitely. Also, Listen servers allow the host to play the game on the machine acting as the server.
A dedicated server is ideal for large internet games. Dedicated servers are able to run for long periods of time with little maintenance if properly configured. Also, dedicated server capable of appearing in the master server list for internet games. It is not possible to play on a machine hosting a dedicated server.
Launching a listen server.
- Launch Call of Duty: World at War Multiplayer Beta.
- Click Start New server.
- Select the Gametype and map.
- Set your server name and any other options.
- Ensure "Dedicated" is set to NO.
- Click Start.
Launching a dedicated server.
- Launch Call of Duty: World at War Multiplayer Beta.
- Click Start New Server.
- Select the Gametype and map.
- Set your server name and any other options.
- Ensure "Dedicated" is set to Internet.
- Click Start.
- The MPB will now close and the server will run in a console window.
NOTE: Your dedicated server may not appear instantly in the Internet Server Browser. Please be patient.
TROUBLESHOOTING
VIDEO ISSUES
Most video issues can be resolved by installing the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's website.

SOUND ISSUES
Most sound issues can be resolved by ensuring you have the latest AC97 drivers for your sound card installed. Check the website of your sound card manufacturer for the latest AC97 driver release if you are encountering problems with audio playback.
INTERNET & CONNECTIVITY ISSUES
COD:WaW MPB requires an active Internet connection for online play. If you are having problems connecting to a server, make sure your Internet connection is active (try websites, other online games, etc).
If you are having problems hosting a server, please ensure that your firewall and/or router are properly configured. Activision does not provide support for routers and firewalls.
KNOWN ISSUES
DIRECTX CRASH AT LAUNCH
If you encounter the following error: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_34.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." Try installing the latest version of DirectX 9.0c (found on www.microsoft.com)
CRASH WITH REALTEK ONBOARD SOUND CARDS
Users with Realtek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at www.microsoft.com
CRASH WITH SIGMATEL ONBOARD SOUND CARDS
There are issues with running the MPB and using Sigmatel(R) onboard sound cards. If you are experiencing this issue, and you are running the MPB from the primary partition, then you will need to install all Windows(R) Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from www.dell.com.
If you are running the MPB from a secondary partition, then follow the above instructions, in addition to downloading the latest BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer.
PUNKBUSTER AND INSTALLATION
When installing COD:WaW MPB, the user has the option to install Punkbuster(TM). If the user chooses not to install Punkbuster(TM) during the MPB installation, but wishes to install it after the MPB is installed, then they will need to uninstall the MPB, and reinstall it, choosing to then install Punkbuster(TM).
Another option is to install the standalone installer for Punkbuster(TM). For Windows(R) XP, Windows(R) XP 64, and Windows(R) Vista Ultimate users, install the PBSETUP utility which can be found at http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php.
For Windows(R) Vista Ultimate 64, Windows(R) Vista Home Premium, and Windows(R) Vista Business users, install the PBSETUP and PBSVC utility which can be found at www.evenbalance.com
ISSUES WITH NETGEAR WGR614v5 ROUTERS
Due to an issue with this hardware revision of the router, players will be unable to host a game using the Netgear WGR614v5 router. Players will, however, still be able to join a game, as long as the proper ports have been forwarded
WINDOWS(R) VISTA USER ACCOUNT CONTROL
For Windows(R) Vista Ultimate 64, Windows(R) Vista Home Premium, and Windows(R) Vista Business users , if “User Account Control” is set to on, Punkbuster(TM) will not function correctly when hosting a server. Please run the program as Administrator when attempting to host a PunkBuster server to ensure full functionality.
Using a Windows(R) Vista profile with no admin rights when “User Account Control” is on will prohibit you from changing the key code via the Options menu. Please run the program as Administrator when attempting change the Key Code to ensure that the change is properly updated.
PUNKBUSTER
If you do not choose to install Punkbuster when installing the MPB, but want to later, you will need to uninstall the MPB and reinstall it. Alternatively, install the PBSETUP utility which can be found at http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php.
